Rickroll QR code generator
The same link you would paste into a chat, drawn as a square somebody can scan. Free, no ads, and the PNG and SVG are yours to keep.
What a rickroll QR code actually is
A QR code carries one piece of information: a web address. A rickroll QR code carries the address of a link you made here — the page that shows the headline, description and image you chose, then plays the video underneath it.
That is the whole trick. There is no separate QR product and nothing hidden inside the pattern. Because a phone camera opens the link the moment it scans, the joke lands on someone holding a phone at a poster, a sticker or a screen, with no typing and no link to send.
How to make one in three steps
On the generator, type a headline and a description and paste an image URL if you want the card to carry a picture. Press Create linkand the page gives you three things: the link, a copy button, and a QR code for that same link.
Download the PNG if the code is going on a screen — a slide, a chat, a group video call. Download the SVG if it is going on anything physical, because a vector file stays sharp whether it is printed on a 2 cm sticker or an A2 poster. Both files encode exactly the same address, so you can use one of each without creating two links.
PNG or SVG: pick by destination, not by preference
Screens are measured in pixels, so a large PNG is the simplest thing to drop into a slide or a chat message. Print is measured in millimetres, and a screenshot of a QR code has already thrown away the detail a printer needs — that is why SVG exists on this page at all.
If you are printing, keep the code square, keep the white margin around it, and avoid laminating it under a glossy sheet that throws the camera's flash back at it. Matte paper scans better than shiny paper, and a dark code on a light background scans better than any inverted scheme, however good it looks.
How small is too small
About 2 cm (0.8 in) wide is the practical floor at arm's length. At 1.5 cm, cameras start to fail on a phone held normally, and below that you are relying on somebody leaning in. Bigger is always safer, because the person scanning is often in a hurry and often holding the phone at an angle.
The link itself stays short, so the code stays simple: fewer characters mean fewer modules and larger individual squares. Nothing you type into the title or description changes the pattern, because the QR code only encodes the address.
Rickroll QR codes with no ads
Scanning lands on the link page directly. There is no interstitial to dismiss, no ad frame around the player and no "continue" button. That matters more than it sounds: the joke is visible the second the page loads, and the person holding the phone is not asked to do anything.
The page uses the standard video embed, so the player is the one you already know. It is the only third party involved, and the abuse policy says so on the page.
Where a QR code works better than a link
Anywhere you cannot paste. A sticker on a laptop lid, a printed poster in an office kitchen, a slide at the end of a presentation, a birthday card, a table number at a party, the back of a phone case.
The rule is simple and it comes from the abuse policy: it has to stay a joke. A code stuck somewhere private, aimed at one person, or dressed up as something official is not a prank any more, and it will be removed if it is reported.
Questions
What is a rickroll QR code?
A QR code is a picture of a web address. A rickroll QR code is a picture of a link made here: when somebody scans it, the page opens, shows the card you designed and plays the video.
How small can I print a rickroll QR code?
Around 2 cm (0.8 in) wide is the practical floor for a phone camera at arm's length. Below about 1.5 cm the modules start to blur together and scans fail, so print the SVG rather than shrinking a screenshot.
Should I download the PNG or the SVG?
PNG for screenshots, chat messages, slides and anything digital. SVG for anything printed: it is vector, so it stays sharp at poster size and never gains blurry edges from resizing.
Does the QR code expire?
No. The code points at a link that stays live, so a sticker printed today still works next year unless the link is reported and removed under the abuse policy.
Does the QR code go to YouTube?
No. It goes to the link made here, which renders your title, description and image and then plays the embed. You cannot point it anywhere else, and nobody can swap the destination later.
